What to expect when you visit
Walking into a masjid for the first time can feel intimidating. Don't worry — here's what to know:
- Dress modestly. Cover shoulders and knees. Women may want to bring a scarf to cover their hair.
- Remove your shoes at the entrance to the prayer hall.
- Tell them you're visiting. Just say “I'm interested in learning about Islam” or “I'd like to speak with the imam.” Every masjid welcomes seekers.
- Friday is busiest. If you want a quieter visit, try any other day, mid-morning.
- Don't worry about doing something wrong. People will help you. You don't need to know any prayers or Arabic. You're a guest.
